Pre-written role plays do exist. Consider a unit that many teachers find hard to teach – the English Civil War. The unit contains a number of concepts (Puritanism, royalism, parliamentarianism, divine right) that pupils often have difficulties in fully understanding. The Schools History Project has a role play that has always worked brilliantly in my experience – The Trial of Charles I (Shephard and Moore, 1995). It has four simple scenes, with a variety of characters both high and low, and conveys simply the story of Charles I’s trial.

Emphasise that the maps are individual and that there are no right or wrong answers. Now ask the students to read their mind maps aloud to themselves or to their neighbour (in turn). Emphasise that this is a vital part of the process. Give them 2 minutes for this. They can now either write out their plans in sentences and paragraphs or they can try to commit it to memory. To do this, ask students to turn their sheets of paper over to the blank side. Give them 5 minutes to recreate their mind map, aiming for 20 words.

The exemplar lessons rely heavily on the reinforcement of the characters’ identities, their allegiances, biased opinions and reasons for these at the start and end of most lessons. Whilst designing the separate lessons, teachers must be conscious of the activities that they are using. A delicate balance between providing new, exciting tasks each time you ask the pupils to do something, and giving them the chance to practise and revisit certain tasks must be struck. The exemplar unit recycles the ‘listening comprehension’ idea to foster good listening skills in younger students while exploring different ways of learning factual information.
