The Schools History Project has a role play that has always worked brilliantly in my experience – The Trial of Charles I (Shephard and Moore, 1995). It has four simple scenes, with a variety of characters both high and low, and conveys simply the story of Charles I’s trial.
Emphasise that the maps are individual and that there are no right or wrong answers. Now ask the students to read their mind maps aloud to themselves or to their neighbour (in turn). Emphasise that this is a vital part of the process. Give them 2 minutes for this. They can now either write out their plans in sentences and paragraphs or they can try to commit it to memory. To do this, ask students to turn their sheets of paper over to the blank side. Give them 5 minutes to recreate their mind map, aiming for 20 words.
